AM The Newberry County Coalition on Underage Drinking is taking a unique approach to increase awareness among area residents of the need to grow strong communities that can stand united in opposing underage drinking and driving. Using the theme Cultivating Comm. Unity, the Coalition has placed baskets with free packets of vegetable and flower seeds at locations throughout the county. Thanks to a partnership with Lowes of Newberry and many local businesses and agencies, the Coalition will be making thousands of free vegetable and flower seed packets available, said Coalition Co Chair Michelle Long. We hope that area residents will stop by one of the many locations and select up to eight free seed packets of their choice. According to Master Deputy Sherri Scott of the Newberry County Sheriffs Office, who is also Co Chair of the Coalition, The baskets contain specially prepared bags to collect your seed packets. The bags have a message from the Coalition inviting YOU to help us Cultivate Comm. Unity by coming together to encourage a new attitude about underage drinking. We hope that as you collect your seed packets, you will read the information on the back of the bag and on an easel placed beside of the baskets. Urgent Scam Alert Callers Posing As Sheriffs Deputies November 2. PM Scammers are calling residents stating they are a Newberry County Sheriffs DeputyInvestigator demanding the resident to get money orders andor gift cards. They leave a local number to call with a threat to follow instructions or face legal actions. This is not a Newberry County Sheriffs Office employee. No deputy would call demanding money, especially money orders or gift cards. The numbers left are not Newberry County numbers but are a common exchange used by Google voice. The use of these numbers is a common scam technique. Citizens are also cautioned not to trust the caller ID of a phone because numbers can be spoofed or copied to resemble a familiar number. In addition there have been several reports of the IRS scam going around. The IRS will not call and make demands of money or gift cards in lieu of arrest. Should you have received such calls, hand up and then let law enforcement know at 8. WKDK Gets Samsung Tour. November 1. 6, 1. Newberry County Deputies Have New Tool To Potentially Save Lives. November 1. 3, 5 2. PM Newberry County Sheriff Lee Fostersaid that deputies in Newberry County have a new tool to help them potentially save a life it is called Narcan. Narcan is an anti overdose drug that has been distributed to all deputies, who are often the first to arrive on scene to an overdose. We will continue to investigate, arrest, and prosecute people who sell or possess heroin and all other illegal drugs, said Sheriff Lee Foster. However, for the person who has overdosed, this can be a second chance at life. This second chance will hopefully be a wakeup call to the person and priceless to their family. Sheriff Foster said that the Narcan was obtained through the Law Enforcement Officers Narcan LEON program on grant from the State of South Carolina through the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services. The deputies received t raining on how opioids effect the body and how to properly administer Narcan before they received their assigned doses. Sheriff Foster said that while Newberry County is seeing an increase of heroin and opioid based drugs, that the increase is far below the numbers across the state. Foster said that this was an effort to be prepared and ahead of the curve. Statewide, the number of opioid overdoses nearly tripled in less than a year. Sheriff Foster said that this was also an officer safety issue with the introduction of Fentanyl to society. Sheriff Foster said that nationwide several officers have accidently ingested fentanyl through their skin or by inhaling it and in several cases these proved deadly. This will provide our officers with the ability to treat such an accidental exposure to this high powered drug. We believe that this is a way to be more effective in law enforcement, said Sheriff Foster.
